Etymology: < phosphatidyl n. + choline n.
Biochemistry.
Any of a class of substances which are phospholipid esters of choline and are widely distributed in animal tissues, egg yolk, and some higher plants. Cf. lecithin n.

1964 Oceanogr. & Marine Biol. 2 173 Among the phospholipids of vertebrates is a class known as plasmalogens. These are closely related to the classical lecithin (phosphatidyl choline) and cephalin (phosphatidyl ethanolamine).
1967 Information Bull. Internat. Union Pure & Appl. Chem. 30 23 The term ‘lecithin’ is permitted but not recommended to designate a 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine. The recommended generic term for such compounds is 3-sn- phosphatidylcholine.
1993 New Scientist 3 Apr. 13/2 Lecithin contains phosphatidylcholine, a precursor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and has been used as a source of phosphatidylcholine for the treatment of dementias.
