Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Phora , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Phora, genus name (P. A. Latreille Précis caractères génériques insectes (1796) 169; < ancient Greek ϕορά motion, rapid motion < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕέρειν to bear: see bear v.1) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Phoridae, family name (J. Curtis Brit. Entomol. (1833) VIII. Plate 437 (caption) ).

Of, relating to, or characteristic of the family Phoridae, comprising small, swift-moving, dark-eyed flies (scuttle flies) with an arched thorax, resembling fruit flies.
