单词 phonolite
释义

phonoliten.

Brit. /ˈfəʊnəlʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈfoʊnəˌlaɪt/
Forms: 1800s phonolyte (irregular), 1800s– phonolite.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: phono- comb. form, -lite comb. form1.
Etymology: < phono- comb. form + -lite comb. form1, after French phonolite (1807; also as phonolithe (1823)), alluding to the ringing sound made by the rock when struck by a hammer, supposedly characteristic of that group of rocks (compare clinkstone n. and its German model Klingstein). Compare German Phonolith (attributed to M. H. Klaproth (1801) by A. N. Holmes Nomencl. Petrol. (1920) 182, but Klaproth's use has not been traced).
Geology.
Originally: a fine-grained igneous rock which made a ringing sound when struck; clinkstone. Now: any of a group of fine-grained, often porphyritic, volcanic rocks consisting of alkali feldspar and feldspathoids (usually nepheline), together with accessory sodium-rich amphiboles and pyroxenes.
