Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin phonocampticus ; phono- comb. form, Greek καμπτικός.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin phonocampticus (see below), or independently < phono- comb. form + ancient Greek καμπτικός flexible ( < καμπτός flexible ( < κάμπτειν to bend ( < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian kampas corner, kumpti to bend, Latvian kampt to grip, kumpt to stoop, hunch one's back) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix). Compare earlier phonocamptical adj., phonocamptics n.Post-classical Latin phonocampticus is attested in the following:1662 Minute 17 Sept. in T. Birch Hist. Royal Soc. (1756) i. 111 Dr. Charlton read his discourse, entituled Apparatus Phonocampticus: or, what inquiries are principally to be made by such, who would attain to the certain knowledge of the nature of echos. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fōunoˌkæ·mptik) /fəʊnəʊˈkæmptɪk/.
