Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Physa.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Physa, genus name (J. P. R. Draparnaud Tableau des mollusques terrestres et fluviatiles de la France (1801) 31, 52) < ancient Greek ϕῦσα bellows, probably < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin pustula pustule n. Compare French physe (1817 in the passage translated in quot. 1834).
A small freshwater snail of the genus Physa or family Physidae, having a thin, sinistral shell; (in form Physa) the genus itself.
