Etymology: < scientific Latin Phomopsis, genus (originally subgenus) name (P. A. Saccardo Sylloge fungorum (1884) III. 66) < Phoma , genus name (E. Fries Systema mycologicum (1821) I. p. lii; irregularly < ancient Greek ϕωΐς blister (attested only in plural, ϕωΐδες ; of uncertain origin) + scientific Latin -oma -oma comb. form) + -opsis -opsis comb. form.

Mycology.

A genus of plant-parasitic mitosporic (imperfect) fungi, members of which are anamorphic forms of the genus Diaporthe (family Valsaceae) and cause leaf spots, fruit rots, and stem cankers in susceptible hosts; (also phomopsis) a fungus of this genus; disease caused by such a fungus.
