Etymology: < scientific Latin Pholcidae, family name (1890 or earlier, attributed to C. L. Koch) < Pholcus , genus name (C. A. Walckenaar Tableau des aranéïdes (1805) 80; < ancient Greek ϕολκός bandy-legged, of uncertain origin) + -id suffix3.
