单词 maillot
释义

maillotn.

Brit. /mʌɪˈəʊ/, U.S. /maɪˈ(j)oʊ/
Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French maillot.
Etymology: Probably < French maillot (mid 16th cent. in Middle French, although the senses found in English are not recorded in French before the 19th cent.), lit. ‘swaddling-clothes’ (Old French maillol , mailloel : compare mail v.1, -ot suffix), ultimately < maille mail n.3Sense 1 is first attested in French in the memoirs of Talma (died 1826), according to whom the word derives from the name of a M. Maillot, said to have been a hosier for the Paris Opera in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and inventor of the garment; however, no record is today found of Maillot's existence, and most French etymologists either reject Talma's explanation, or consider influence of the existing word maillot ‘swaddling-clothes’ to have been a major factor in the name's adoption.
