Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin phoenīc- , phoenix , -oid suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin phoenīc-, phoenix date palm (see phoenix n.2) + -oid suffix, after scientific Latin Phoenicoideae, subfamily name (H. E. Moore 1960, in Principes 4 120).
Botany.
Belonging or relating to the subfamily Phoenicoideae of palms, comprising the genus Phoenix.
