Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Phoebēus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Phoebēus ( < ancient Greek Φοίβειος of or relating to Phoebus (Apollo) < Φοῖβος Phoebus (see Phoebus n.) + -ειος, suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. Compare French phébéen (1579 in Middle French, now obsolete in this sense). Compare also classical Latin Phoebēius of or relating to Phoebus, Italian febeo (a1416).
Classical Mythology. Chiefly poetic. Now rare.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of Phoebus (Apollo), esp. as the god of poetry or as the god of the sun.
