Etymology: < French pesade (1611 in Cotgrave), alteration of †posade (1579: see note) < Italian posata stop, pause, rest (a1375; use in dressage attested from 1550) < posare to stop, pause (13th cent. in this sense: see pose v.¹) + -ata -ade suffix.French posade was apparently altered to pesade under the influence of peser (see peise v.).
