Etymology: < the name of the Philippines, an archipelago in South East Asia, now an independent state, after Spanish Filipino Filipino n. and adj.; compare -ine suffix¹.The Philippines were named after Philip II of Spain (see Philippical adj.), in whose reign (in 1565) they were claimed as a Spanish colony; compare Spanish islas Filipinas (1570). They had previously been discovered in 1521 by Magellan, sailing under the Spanish flag, and named San Lazaro.
