Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: philanthropist n., -oid suffix.
Etymology: < philanthrop- (in philanthropist n.) + -oid suffix, humorously after anthropoid n.Coinage of the term is variously attributed to Edwin R. Embree, Frederick Keppel, or Raymond S. Rubinow; compare quots. 1937 at main sense, 1949 at main sense, and the following:1996 N.Y. Times Apr. 12/4 A self-styled philanthropoid who made a science of giving away other people's money, Mr. Rubinow coined the term in Chicago in the 1930's while working for the Julius Rosenwald Fund.
Originally U.S. humorous.
A professional philanthropist; a person who dispenses funds for a charitable or grant-awarding institution. Also as adj.

1937 N.Y. Times 20 Feb. 18/6 Dr. Keppel spoke as a ‘philanthropoid’, which, he said, was a member of a ‘minor sub-caste in American life’ charged with the preparation of material upon which lay boards controlling trust funds acted and with the carrying out of the laymen's directions.
1949 Harper's Mag. Mar. 9/1 Edwin R. Embree..calls himself a ‘philanthropoid’, a term which he and Frederick Keppel of the Carnegie Corporation coined some years ago to describe a person who gives away other people's money.
