Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin phasma , -id suffix³; Greek ϕάσμα , -id suffix³.

Etymology: < classical Latin phasma or its etymon ancient Greek ϕάσμα apparition, ghost (see phasm n.) + -id suffix³. In sense 1 after either scientific Latin Phasmidae, family name (G. R. Gray Entomol. Austral. I. (1833) 25) or scientific Latin Phasmida, group name (W. E. Leach in Edinb. Encycl. IX. (1815) 119). With sense 2 compare scientific Latin Phasmida, class name, and also scientific Latin Phasmidia, proposed division name (1933).

1. Entomology. An insect of the order Phasmida, which comprises the leaf insects and stick insects, or of the family Phasmidae, comprising the stick insects alone. Also attributive or as adj.
