Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Phlomis.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Phlomis, genus name (Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 584) < classical Latin phlomis one or other plant of the genus Phlomis (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ϕλομίς (Dioscorides) < ancient Greek ϕλόμος mullein ( > classical Latin phlomos (Pliny)), of unknown origin, perhaps a loanword + -ις -id suffix². Compare earlier phlome n.Linnaeus' earliest reference to the name phlomis is to l'Obel (M. de l'Obel Plantarum seu Stirpium Icones (1581) 562), who, however, uses the form phlomos ; compare also quot. 1728.

A genus of shrubby and herbaceous plants (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae)) native to Mediterranean Europe and Asia, and typically having grey-green, woolly leaves and verticillasters of yellow, purple, or white flowers; (also phlomis) a plant of this genus, esp. Jerusalem sage, P. fruticosa.The identity of the plant in quot. 1706 is unclear.
