Any of various types of woven material made from plant or vegetable fibre; esp. (a) a fine, light, linen-like cloth originally made in China and plain woven from ramie or another similar plant fibre; (b) a thick fabric made in West Africa and the Canary Islands from some types of vegetable fibre; (c) a material made from jute, hemp, raffia, or other similar plant or vegetable fibres which is used as a textured wallcovering.
