A substance isolated from cultures of Staphylococcus aureus, said to produce intense inflammation.

1890 J. S. Billings National Med. Dict. 330/1 Phlogosin, Leber's name for a product of cultures of Staphylococcus aureus, which produces intense local inflammation and suppuration.
1891 Lancet 27 June 1446/2 From these cocci he [sc. Leber] obtained a crystalline substance..capable of exciting intense inflammation leading to necrosis. To this substance he applied the term ‘phlogosin’.
1896 T. C. Allbutt et al. Syst. Med. I. 521 Leber obtained phlogosin from the staphylococcus aureus.
