Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Malayalam. Partly a borrowing from Tamil. Etymons: Malayalam pēṭṭa; Tamil pēṭṭai.
Etymology: < Malayalam pēṭṭa and Tamil pēṭṭai, probably ultimately < Sanskrit pratiṣṭhā establishment.
1. In Sri Lanka and southern India: a town or village lying outside or around a fort, and itself sometimes partly fortified. Now historical.
