Primary stress is attracted to the syllable immediately preceding this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly.

Etymology: Representing Greek -γένεια , the ending of abstract nouns < adjectives in -γενής (as in ὁμογένεια , < ὁμογενής ): see -gen comb. form. But in all probability it was actually < the root gen- in genesis , etc. (vaguely apprehended as meaning ‘to produce’) + -y suffix³, French -ie.

= modern French -génie, in modern scientific language appended to Greek stems to form nouns with the general sense ‘mode of production (of something specified)’, as in anthropogeny, biogeny, cosmogeny, geogeny, ontogeny, phylogeny, physiogeny, etc. Most of these nouns have either corresponding nouns in -genesis comb. form, or adjectives -genetic comb. form (in many instances both of these).
