Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pétrolène.
Etymology: < French pétrolène (J. B. Boussingault 1837, in Ann. de Chim. et de Physique 64 145) < pétrole (see petrol n.) + -ène -ene comb. form. Compare asphaltene n. and petroline n. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pe·trolīn) /ˈpɛtrəʊliːn/.
Chemistry.
The oily volatile component of asphalt, originally considered to consist of a single hydrocarbon and later discovered to be a mixture of compounds; any of a variety of compounds present in this mixture. Cf. asphaltene n.

1837 Edinb. New Philos. Jrnl. 22 78 As this carburetted hydrogen appears to constitute the principal liquid of bitumens, the author designates it by the appellation Petroline.
