Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pack n.1, rat n.1
Etymology: < pack n.1 + rat n.1, in allusion to the animals' habit of collecting and accumulating nesting material.
1. Any of several rat-like rodents of North and Central America, of the genus Neotoma and related genera of the family Muridae, noted for collecting sticks and other materials and accumulating them within their nests. Also called trade-rat, woodrat.
