Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin petraria.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin petraria military engine for propelling stones (8th cent.; frequently from c1125 to 15th cent. in British sources; also as petrarium (1194, 1236 in British sources)) < classical Latin petra stone, rock (see petro- comb. form1) + -āria -ary suffix1. Compare earlier pedrero n. and perrier n.1 2, and Romance cognates cited at those entries.
