Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕάος , -meter comb. form2.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕάος light ( < an extended form of the Indo-European base of ϕαίνειν to show, appear: see -phane comb. form) + -meter comb. form2.Corresponding use in French by Buffon (see quot. 1747) has not been traced. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (feˌǫ·mĭtəɹ) /feɪˈɒmɪtə(r)/.
Obsolete.
An instrument for measuring the intensity of light; a photometer.
