Etymology: < classical Latin phallus penis (isolated attestation in an inscription), in post-classical Latin also image of the (usually erect) penis (4th cent.) < ancient Greek ϕαλλός (see phallos n.). Compare French phallus, †phalle (1570 in Middle French as fallot), Italian fallo (1630).With sense 2 compare scientific Latin phallus (1564: see quot. 1976 at sense 2).
