A cylindrical map projection which uses a rectangular decimal grid to represent latitude and longitude, representing areas in the correct proportion but distorting shape, especially near the poles.The Peters projection was devised in order to give a fairer representation of equatorial countries (which include most developing countries), whose areas are under-represented by the usual projections such as Mercator's.
