Etymology: < the name of St Peter (see Peter n.) + man n.1 With sense 1 compare earlier Peter n. 2. In sense 2 after Dutch peterman (18th cent.), spec. use of peterman (a nickname for) an inhabitant of Louvain (arising from the fact that the principal church of Louvain is dedicated to St Peter). With senses 3 and 4 compare Peter n. 6, pete n. 2, peter v.1 3, 4.Apparently attested earlier as a surname:1342 Close Rolls Edward III 693 John Petreman.
