Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin permissibilis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin permissibilis that can be permitted, allowable (c1290 in a British source) < classical Latin permiss- , past participial stem of permittere permit v. + -ibilis -ible suffix. Compare Middle French (Liège) permissible (in an apparently isolated attestation), French permissible (1845, rare), Italian permissibile (a1580).A parallel formation permissable is also occasionally attested (compare -able suffix).
