单词 passing bell
释义

passing belln.

Brit. /ˈpɑːsɪŋ ˌbɛl/, /ˈpasɪŋ ˌbɛl/, U.S. /ˈpæsɪŋ ˌbɛl/
Forms: see passing n. and bell n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: passing n., bell n.1
Etymology: < passing n. + bell n.1
1. A bell rung at a person's death or funeral; = death bell n. 1. Now chiefly historical. The bell is now rarely or never rung until after death has occurred (see Notes & Queries (1904) 1 308, 350, (1862) 2 246). For the former occasions of ringing in the Church of England, cf. Constit. & Canons Eccl. (1603) lxvii, ‘And when any is passing out of this life, a bell shall be tolled, and the Minister shall not then slack to do his last duty. And after the party's death, if it so fall out, there shall be rung no more than one short peal, and one other before the burial, and one other after the burial.’ Although the practice is not mentioned in the revised canons of the Church of England in 1969, a slow tolling bell is still sometimes rung before a funeral.
