Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French perlage.
Etymology: < French perlage (1927 or earlier in this sense; earlier in the senses ‘action of adorning with pearls’ (1874), ‘adornment consisting of pearls’ (1926)) < perl pearl n.1 + -age -age suffix.Compare the following earlier example in the sense ‘pearl adornment’, perhaps also punning on the use with reference to champagne:1904 H. O. Sturgis Belchamber (1905) 89 Who is the champagne blonde with the iridescent perlage trimming next your brother?
The aggregation of tiny bubbles which forms on the surface of a glass of sparkling wine, champagne, etc. Cf. mousse n. 1.
