Brides in ancient Greece would wear a garland of olive, while a crown of olive would be presented as a high civic honour, and as a prize in the Olympic Games. The classical symbolism has in some cases merged with that in the biblical story of the Flood, in which a dove sent forth by Noah from the Ark brought back an olive leaf (Genesis 8:11), showing that the waters of the Flood were receding and that God had therefore shown mercy.
