Etymology: < ancient Greek πεταλώδης leaf-like (see petalodic adj.) + -y suffix³, apparently after petalodic adj.De Candolle (see quot. 1916) uses French pétalodé , adjective (see petalodic adj.), but no corresponding noun. Masters also uses a noun petalode to denote the resulting structures:1869 M. T. Masters Veg. Teratol. iv. i. iii. 449 In a garden azalea there was intermediate between the calyx and the corolla, both of which were normal, a series of five petalodes, alternating with the sepals.
