Etymology: < French piedra (E. Desenne 1878, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 87 34) < Spanish piedra , specific use (see below) of piedra stone < classical Latin petra (see petro- comb. form¹).Desenne credits the term to Nicolas Osorio, Colombian pathologist; the term was therefore probably coined in Spanish. N.E.D.(1906) gives the pronunciation as (pye·dră) /ˈpjɛdrə/.

Superficial fungal infection of hair resulting in the formation of small nodules on or within the hair shafts.Black piedra, caused by the fungus Piedraia hortae and characterized by gritty, dark brown to black nodules chiefly affecting scalp hair, occurs in tropical regions. White piedra, caused by Trichosporon species, is characterized by soft pale nodules usually affecting genital or facial hair and is seen in semi-tropical and temperate regions.
