Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Amorphozoa.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Amorphozoa (1830 or earlier) < amorpho- amorpho- comb. form + -zoa -zoa comb. form, after French amorphozoaires , plural noun ( H. M. D. de Blainville De l'organisation des animaux (1822) 217). Compare amorphozoary n., and also amorpha n.2
Zoology. Now historical.
With plural agreement. A group of animals lacking a definite, regular form, comprising principally sponges and certain types of protozoans. Also (in form amorphozoa): such animals collectively.
