Etymology: < Italian †penseroso (1565 or earlier; variant of pensieroso (adjective) pensive, meditative, thoughtful (a1311; < pensiero pensiero n. + -oso -ous suffix)), after the title of Milton's poem Il Penseroso (1632).Sense A. 1 is not attested in Italian.
