Origin: A borrowing from Marathi. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Marathi ḍoṅgarī; Dutch dongri.
Etymology: < Marathi ḍoṅgarī (in ḍoṅgarī kāpaḍ Dongari cloth) < the first element of the name of Ḍoṅgarī Killā , lit. ‘hill fort’, the name of a fortification and the adjacent port near Mumbai, from which the cloth was originally traded. In quot. 1613 perhaps via Dutch dongri kind of cloth (1619 as dongery; now historical). The English forms may have been influenced by Gujarati ḍũgarī hillock (cognate with Marathi ḍoṅgarī hill, as used in the place name), although the Gujarati word is not attested in the sense ‘dungaree’.
