Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phalange.
Etymology: < Middle French, French phalange (see phalanx n.).In quot. 1562 at sense 1 after Italian falange (see phalanx n.). In sense 4 after French phalanges libanaises (not dated in dictionaries of French, but compare phalanges espagnoles (1937)). In some instances it is not possible to determine whether phalanges shows the plural of phalanx n. or of phalange n.1

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French phalange; Latin phalangium.
Etymology: < Middle French phalange venomous spider (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1552 in the passage translated in quot. 1694 at sense 1; French †phalange harvestman) and its etymon classical Latin phalangium phalangium n. Compare earlier phalangium n. and the parallels cited at that entry.In form phalanga (compare quot. 1584 at sense 1) probably after Latin feminine nouns ending in -a.
Obsolete.
