Etymology: < classical Latin phagedaenicus of the nature of a phagedaena < Hellenistic Greek ϕαγεδαινικός < ancient Greek ϕαγέδαινα phagedaena n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare French phagédénique (1545 in Middle French as phagedenique in sense A. 1; 1663 in sense A. 2 in eau phagédénique , now obsolete in this sense). Compare earlier phagedaenical adj.Compare the following earlier unassimilated loan, apparently reflecting use as noun of the neuter plural of classical Latin phagedaenicus:1563 T. Gale Certaine Wks.
