Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pénétrant; Latin penetrant-, penetrāns.
Etymology: Partly < Middle French, French pénétrant (1314 in Old French in sense ‘piercing’ (earliest in medical use), 1666 in sense ‘having mental penetration’; use as adjective of present participle of pénétrer : see penetrate v.), and partly < classical Latin penetrant-, penetrāns, present participle (in post-classical Latin tending to be used as adjective, from 4th cent.) of penetrāre penetrate v.
