Etymology: < French phénol (C. Gerhardt 1843, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 7 221; 1860 in sense 2) < phène phene n. + -ol -ol suffix.
Chemistry.
1. A colourless, mildly acidic, toxic, hygroscopic, crystalline compound, C6H5OH, obtained from coal tar, used widely in chemical synthesis and in dilute form as a disinfectant. Cf. carbolic acid n. at carbolic adj. 1.
