Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pepper n., water n.
Etymology: < pepper n. + water n. In sense 2 after Tamil miḷaku-taṇṇīr, miḷaku-taṇṇi mulligatawny n.; compare slightly later mulligatawny n.
1. Biology. A mixture of finely ground black pepper and rainwater or river water, left to stand for a few days so that microscopic organisms in the water grow and multiply and can be observed under the microscope. Now historical.
