Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pepōn-, pepō.
Etymology: < classical Latin pepōn-, pepō (in post-classical Latin also pepon , c400) a water-melon or other gourd < ancient Greek πέπων a kind of gourd or melon eaten when ripe, use as noun (short for πέπων σίκυος , lit. a ripe cucumber) of πέπων (adjective) ripened, ripe, mellow < the base of πέσσειν (Attic πέττειν ) to cook < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin coquere to cook (see cook n.1). Compare Middle French, French †pepon melon (c1490), pumpkin (1564 in an isolated attestation in Middle French, subsequently from 1791; now (rare) pépon).In form pepo probably after the Latin nominative singular pepō.
Now rare.
The fruit of a kind of gourd, originally probably a kind of melon, Cucumis melo, in later use perhaps the pumpkin, a variety of Cucurbita pepo. Also: the plant itself.
