Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin accentualis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin accentualis (1587 or earlier) < classical Latin accentus accent n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare French accentuel (1700 (in the passage translated in quot. 1705) or earlier in this sense; earlier in sense ‘(of a letter) marked with a diacritic accent’ (1621)).
Of or relating to accent or stress in speech; based on stress, as distinct from quantity, pitch, or some other characteristic.
