Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Penātēs.
Etymology: < classical Latin Penātēs (plural noun) the gods that protect or watch over a household, especially its storeroom < penus innermost part of a house, of unknown origin + -ātēs, plural of -ās, suffix forming adjectives. Compare French penates (1491), Spanish penates (first half of the 15th cent.).There is no etymological connection with pantry n. (compare quot. 2002).
In ancient Roman mythology: the gods that protect or watch over a household, esp. its storeroom. Hence: household possessions regarded as defining or embodying a person's home (now more usually in lares and penates n. at lar n. Additions). Also figurative and in extended use.
