Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin peplus; Greek πέπλος.
Etymology: < classical Latin peplus and its etymon ancient Greek πέπλος outer robe or shawl worn by women in ancient Greece, a reduplicated form < a stem also seen in classical Latin plicāre , ancient Greek πλέκειν to fold (see fold v.1). Compare German Peplos (1835 in the passage translated in quot. 1850 at β. ). Compare earlier peplum n.
An outer robe or shawl worn by Greek women in the classical period and up to about 300 a.d.; spec. the richly embroidered robe of this kind woven yearly for the statue of the goddess Athene in Athens, depicting mythological subjects and carried in procession to her temple in the greater Panathenaea.The peplos consisted of a large rectangular piece of material draped from the shoulders in loose folds and usually belted around the waist or (later) under the bust. It was originally made of wool or linen but later also of cotton or silk.
