Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: peonin n., -idin suffix.
Etymology: < peon- (in peonin n.) + -idin suffix, after German Päonidin (R. M. Willstätter & T. J. Nolan 1915, in Ann. der Chem. 108 136).
Chemistry.
An anthocyanidin found in some plant tissues (usually isolated as the reddish brown chloride, C16H13O6Cl), of which peonin is the glycoside.
