Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Peola.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably < the name of Peola Johnson, a light-skinned African American woman who attempts to pass as white in Fannie Hurst's novel Imitation of Life (1933) and the 1934 film adaptation of the same name.
U.S. slang (frequently in African-American usage, with depreciative connotations).
A light-skinned black person, esp. a girl or young woman.
