Etymology: < post-classical Latin pemphix (1798 in the passage translated in quot. 1801) < ancient Greek πέμϕιξ breath, blast, in Hellenistic Greek also pustule (Galen, citing an ancient Greek author) < the same base as ancient Greek πομϕός pustule (see pompholyx n.). Compare earlier pemphigus n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pe·mfiks) /ˈpɛmfɪks/.
