Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Pelée , -an suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Mount Pelée, a volcano on the island of Martinique, West Indies, which erupted in this way in 1902 + -an suffix. Compare French péléen (1906).
Geology.
Of, relating to, or designating a type of volcanic eruption characterized by the vertical extrusion from the centre of very viscous lava which tends to form a solid plug or dome, and the lateral emission of nuées ardentes from points of weakness in the flank.
