单词 pelvi-
释义

pelvi-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pelvis n., -i- connective.
Etymology: < pelv- (in pelvis n.) + -i- connective.Attested in a small number of English formations, chiefly medical terms, from the late 18th cent., apparently earliest in pelvimeter n. Compare French pelvi- (formations in which are found from at least the early 19th cent.). Post-classical Latin and scientific Latin pelvi- is attested earlier (from at least the early 18th cent.), but only in the unrelated sense ‘shaped like a basin’ (see pelviform adj.). Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin and Greek origin. The position of the stress differs between compounds of pelvi- in accordance with the general stress patterns of English.
Forming nouns and adjectives in the sense ‘of or relating to a pelvis’, ‘of the pelvis and ——’.
