Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pericladium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin pericladium (H. F. Link Elementa Philosophiae Botanicae (1824) 178) < peri- peri- prefix + ancient Greek κλάδος branch (see cladus n.) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare phyllocladium n. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (periklēi·diɒ̆m) /pɛrɪˈkleɪdɪəm/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare.
A petiole base that is expanded to sheathe the supporting stem.
